Why we recommend self-pay treatment

Our clinic is built around longer appointments, premium materials, and prosthodontic-level planning — all of which are only possible under the self-pay framework. For the restorations most international patients want (porcelain and zirconia crowns, implants, Invisalign, veneers, aesthetic work), self-pay is the standard in Japan regardless of nationality, because these materials are not covered by the public insurance system. This is where we can offer the clearest long-term result.

Japanese public health insurance is also accepted for basic care — routine check-ups, cavity fillings, and insurance-scale cleanings. Please bring your insurance card on your first visit. We'll explain clearly which items are covered and which are self-pay, with a written estimate in English before any treatment begins.

A note on Japanese public insurance dentistry

Japanese health insurance covers basic, standardized procedures. The materials and protocols allowed under insurance reflect what is mandated nationally — not necessarily what is supported by current international evidence.

A few realities worth knowing:

  • Silver (amalgam) fillings and "kinpala" gold-palladium crowns remain insurance-covered in Japan, but are no longer routinely used in the US, UK, EU, or Australia due to aesthetic, biocompatibility, and metallurgical concerns.
  • Insurance-grade CAD/CAM resin crowns are a Japan-specific material with limited international long-term evidence compared with lithium-disilicate (e.max) or zirconia ceramic restorations used as the global standard.
  • Insurance appointment times are capped at very short national-rate slots — making detailed planning, intraoral photography, and thorough English explanation practically impossible within that window.

Insurance is appropriate for routine check-ups, basic cleanings, and acute symptom relief. For long-term restorations, implants, cosmetic work, and anything involving complex planning, internationally-trained patients almost always choose self-pay — both in Japan and abroad.

After-hours / closed-day visits

In some cases, an out-of-hours visit may be arranged outside regular clinic hours or on a closed day. Availability is not guaranteed. If an out-of-hours visit is arranged and provided, an additional fee of ¥30,000 applies.
